There are various ways you can customize your mailbox to fit your needs. These customization options can be found in the Settings → Display options and Settings → Mail preferences screens.
Display options
On the Settings → Display options screen, you can control your language and time settings, themes and colors, and preferred accessibility settings.
Region
The Region section includes options related to language and time preferences.
- Language: Select your preferred language for the Fastmail interface.
- Start week on: Choose what day your week starts on.
- Time format: Choose what between a 12-hour clock or 24-hour clock.
Theme
In the Theme section, you can customize the appearance of your Fastmail interface. This includes choosing preferred colors, and also switching between light mode and dark mode.

Navigation
The navigation bar on the left-hand side of your mailbox can be customized. Enabling each option will include an icon in the navigation bar, which allows you to click and directly go to that specific screen. Disabling an option will remove the corresponding icon from the navigation bar. If all options are disabled, the navigation bar will be hidden completely.
Accessibility
The accessibility options allow you to change the Fastmail interface to fit your needs.
- Text size: Increase or decrease text size.
- UI Font: Change the font used in the interface. Our default font is Proxima Nova. If you prefer, you can change this to match your system font.
- Use a monospaced font for plain text: When enabled, the font used for displaying plain text will be a monospace font.
- Show a dividing line between rows: When enabled, there will be dividing lines displayed between rows.
- Enable keyboard shortcuts: When enabled, keyboard shortcuts can be used. When disabled, keyboard shortcuts will not work. See the Keyboard shortcuts help page for what keyboard shortcuts are available.
- Drag/hold activation delay: There can be a delay added for when you are performing dragging/holding actions in the interface. When the Off option is selected, dragging/holding will be immediate with no delay.

Mail preferences
On the Settings → Mail preferences screen, you can customize the look of your mailbox, how your mail is organized, and also your mail composing and reading options.
Mailbox display
- Reading pane: Change the location of the reading pane, or disable it completely.
- Message previews: Enable or disable message previews.
- Hover actions: Show or hide hover actions on messages.
- Show avatars: Show or hide avatars.
Mail organization
You can choose to organize mail using folders mode or labels mode. Switching between the two is easy, and can be done by choosing either Folders or Labels in the Organize messages with section. Please see the Setting up and using folders or Setting up and using labels help pages for more details.

Compose and reading options
There are also customization settings for when you're composing, replying to, and forwarding messages. Please refer to the Compose settings section in the Composing a message help page for more details.
Reading
Remote images: Choose how you want remote images to be displayed.
View messages in: Choose to view messages in rich text or plain text.
Always show message headers: Enabling this option will automatically display the headers of a message when viewing it.
Display the following extra headers when reading messages: You can add headers that you would like to be displayed in messages. These extra headers will be displayed along with the default headers.
