How to set your time zone

The first time you load your Calendar screen in Fastmail, we will suggest a time zone to match what is set on your device. If you have the accurate local time and time zone set in your computer's preferences, this should be reflected in the Fastmail web interface.

You can also manually choose your time zone, or select multiple time zones.

How to change your time zone

You can change your time zone by going to Settings → Calendars, then clicking the Calendar options tab. Find the Time zone option at the top of the screen and select your desired time zone from the dropdown menu.

You can also change your time zone while viewing your calendar by clicking the icon with three dots next to your current calendar view (Day, 4 days, Week, or Month), then selecting View in time zone....

A dropdown list will appear. You'll see recent time zones you've used at the top of the dropdown list. You can select your desired time zone from the list, or you can start typing in a location or time zone and matching options will be displayed.

Please note that the location you select may not always match what is displayed as the time zone location. The location displayed will be the most definitive location for the time zone. For example, if you were to select Philadelphia, PA, USA (EST) as your time zone, this will be displayed as New York, NY, USA (EST).

You can also quickly switch between time zones when creating or editing an event.

How to see multiple time zones & set up world clock

If you need to see your events in more than one time zone, you can set multiple time zones for your account. This can be helpful if you are traveling, or if you frequently interact with people in other time zones.

You can add a time zone by going to Settings → Calendars, then clicking the Calendar options tab. Under the World clock option, click Add time zone and select your desired time zone from the dropdown menu. You can also do this while viewing your calendar by clicking on the time zone next to the day of the week, then selecting Add time zone....

Once you have selected your world clock time zones, your calendar will display the time zones on the left hand side of the screen, and as columns to the left of your events.

You can control how your extra time zones are displayed by going to your Settings → Calendars → Calendar options screen and going to the Show extra time zones on day/week view option. You can also do this while viewing your calendar by clicking on the time zone next to the day of the week and selecting Show extra time zones. Three options are offered:

  • Always, if there's room: Extra time zones are always shown, unless the window is not wide enough. If the window is not wide enough to show extra time zones, they will be shown on hover or tap.
  • On hover or tap: Extra time zones are hidden unless you hover over the time zone with your mouse, or if you tap on the time zone while using a touchscreen.
  • Never: Extra time zones are never shown.

World clock time zones will only be shown in the calendar if it is set to the Day, 4 days, or Week views. They will not be shown on individual events, or if the calendar is set to the Month view.

When using the sidebar calendar, world clock time zones will only be shown if the sidebar calendar is set to Day or 3 days. They will not be shown if the sidebar calendar is set to the Agenda view. If you have your extra time zone view set to the Always, if there's room option, the width of the sidebar will determine whether the time zones are always shown, or if they are only shown upon hover/tap.

If you want to remove a time zone, this can be done at any time by returning to your Settings → Calendars → Calendar options screen, then clicking the X next to the time zone. You can also do this while viewing your calendar by clicking on the time zone next to the day of the week, then selecting Remove.

Floating time

You can select a special time zone called "Floating time" from the time zone list in your events or calendar.

When your time zone is set to floating time, your events will always occur at the same start time, instead of changing relative to your time zone.

As an example, if you created an event at 9:00 AM Eastern time, then traveled to a city in another time zone, the event would still show as 9:00 AM in your calendar instead of being updated to reflect your new time zone.

If you view your entire calendar in floating time, all events will be displayed in floating time.

Troubleshooting incorrect timestamps

If your emails display timestamps which are drastically different than the times they were sent, there are a few things to check in order to work out where the problem is occurring.

  1. Double check that your computer is set to the correct time and time zone. Timestamps are generally based on the time and time zone set on your device.
  2. If you're seeing incorrect timestamps on your emails while using Firefox, you may need to disable Fingerprinting Protection. This feature spoofs the time zone, which changes the times displayed on emails. To disable it, visit about:config and search privacy. resistFingerprinting.
  3. Try disabling any VPNs or browser extensions you may be using.
