Migrate to Fastmail from Proton Mail

The following information makes it easy to move all your information into Fastmail from Proton Mail, once you have chosen a plan. Our plan offerings can be found on our Pricing page. Toggle the Monthly prices / Annual prices (Best Value) button to see how much you can save by paying yearly. If you have a multi-user account, mix and match pricing lets you pick the best plan to suit each person's needs.

Set up your email address and/or domain

The first step is to sign up with the email address you want to use with Fastmail.

If you don't have your own domain, you'll need to select an email address using one of Fastmail's domains.

If you have your own domain, follow our domain and email migration guide to learn how to transfer your domain, mail accounts, and addresses to Fastmail.

Set up your other users

If you are migrating an account with more than one user, you'll need to set up a group account. For this, use our multi-user guide here.

Transfer your mail

You can import all your mail from Proton Mail to Fastmail.

First, you will need to export your mail from Proton Mail using Proton's Import-Export app.

  1. Download the Import-Export app.
  2. Log in to the Import-Export app using your Proton Mail username and password.
  3. Select Export All to export emails from all your email addresses, or select Export to export emails from individual email addresses.
  4. Select which folders, custom folders, and labels you want to export, and the location where you would like to download the folder containing the exported messages.
  5. Click Export.

You can import the EML files into Fastmail by following these steps:

  1. Log in to the Fastmail web interface and open your Inbox. (If you wish to import the EML files into a folder other than the Inbox, you can open that folder instead.)
  2. Drag and drop the EML files into your message list.

If you have exported emails from Proton Mail in MBOX format, you can import them into Fastmail using our import tool:

  1. Log in to the Fastmail web interface and open the Settings → Migration → Import screen.
  2. Click Proton and Hey, MBOX files.
  3. Click Upload files and select the MBOX files you wish to import. From here, you'll see the names and sizes of the MBOX files that will be imported. On the right side, there is a drop down menu titled Destination where you can select a destination folder for the emails to be imported into. (The destination is set to the Inbox by default.)
  4. Click Start import.

You will need to keep the browser tab open while the import is in progress. If you have to stop the import, you can resume it at a later time by reimporting the same file. Messages that have already been successfully imported will not be imported again, so you do not have to worry about duplicates.
