Sending and receiving attachments

You can send or receive any kind of attachment, as long as the resulting email is under 70 MB in total size. Combined with email encoding, this usually means an attachment should be no larger than 50 MB.

Attachments with double file extensions (e.g. filename.doc.exe) as well as .pif, .scr, .cpl and .com files are not allowed, as these are commonly used when sending email viruses.

Sending attachments

When composing an email using Fastmail in a web browser, you can attach files by clicking the Attach button. From the Attach menu, you can choose from three ways to attach files:

  • Upload files to upload from your computer or device
  • Attach from file storage to upload from your Fastmail file storage
  • Attach from Dropbox to upload from your connected Dropbox account.

Upload files

Selecting the Upload files option will open the device's file chooser. This works whether you are accessing Fastmail on a desktop computer or over a mobile device.

You can attach multiple files by selecting more than one file in the file chooser.

Attach from file storage

If you have files in your Fastmail file storage, you can choose one or more to attach to an email. When composing a message, use the Attach files button and select the files from your storage that you'd like to include in your email.

Attach from Dropbox

If you have a Dropbox account, you can link it to Fastmail.

When you go to add files from Dropbox, you will first need to log in to your Dropbox account (if you're not already logged in). Then, you'll need to confirm that you want to link Fastmail to your Dropbox account.

Dropbox provides information on what happens when you link to a Dropbox account.

You can revoke access from Fastmail to Dropbox at any time.

Once linked, you can browse the files in your Dropbox storage. Select the ones to include, then use the Attach files button.

Downloading attachments

If you want to save attachments from emails, you can choose to download the attachments individually.

To download just the attachments of an email message:

  1. Find the email you would like to download the attachment from.

  2. There is a small checkbox next to the attachments.

  3. Click the checkbox and it gives you three options: Download zip, Save, and Delete from message.

  4. You can choose the Download zip option to download the attachment. Alternatively, you can also save the attachment directly to your Fastmail account's file storage by choosing the Save option and clicking on Save to file storage.

Removing attachments

To remove an attachment from an email you're drafting, click the X next to the filename to delete the attachment from the email.

To remove an attachment from an email you've received, select the checkbox for the attachment to remove. This will prompt a pop-up menu to appear. From here you can select between:

  • download the attachment(s) in a zip file
  • save the attachment(s) to your Dropbox account or Fastmail file storage
  • delete the attachment(s) from the message.

If you delete an attachment from a received email, Fastmail will show that there were attachments that have been removed.
