Setting up K-9 Mail

The instructions and screenshots in this setup guide are for the K-9 Mail app, which is an open source email client for Android.

You can set up K-9 Mail by using the OAuth method, or by using an app password.

OAuth setup

  1. Open the K-9 Mail app.
  2. If you don't already have an account set up, you'll be prompted to enter an email address. Enter your Fastmail username, then tap Next.
    • If you already have an account set up in the app, you can open the app's menu, scroll down to Settings, and then tap Add Account.
  3. On the next page, the Fastmail server settings should automatically be configured and displayed for you to confirm. Tap Sign in.

  4. K-9 Mail will ask for permission to access your Fastmail account. Tap Allow.

    Your account should now be set up!

App password setup

  1. Open the K-9 Mail app.
  2. If you don't already have an account set up, you'll be prompted to enter an email address. Enter your Fastmail username, then tap Next.
    • If you already have an account set up in the app, you can open the app's menu, scroll down to Settings, and then tap Add Account.
  3. On the next page, the Fastmail server settings should be automatically configured and displayed for you to confirm. Tap Edit configuration.

  4. From here, you can manually enter the configuration and server settings. First, enter your account name, name, and email signature (the account name and email signature are optional). Tap Next to move on to the next step.

  5. Set up your sync options. You can select the check frequency and the number of messages to display. You can also choose to enable or disable notifications. Tap Next to move on to the next step.

  6. Enter the incoming server settings. When you're done, tap Next.
    • Protocol: IMAP
    • Server: imap.fastmail.com
    • Security: SSL/TLS
    • Port: 993
    • Authentication: Normal password
    • Username: Your Fastmail account username
    • Password: The app password generated for this setup
    • Client certificate: None
    • Auto-detect IMAP namespace: leave ticked
    • IMAP path prefix: leave blank

      Note: If you want to set up POP instead, switch the Protocol to the POP option. For the POP server settings, please refer to the Server names and ports help page.

  7. Enter the outgoing server settings. When done, tap Next.
    • Server: smtp.fastmail.com
    • Security: SSL/TLS
    • Port: 465
    • Authentication: Normal password
    • Username: Your Fastmail account username
    • Password: The app password generated for this setup
    • Client certificate: None

  8. Your account should be set up after going through these steps.
