How Fastmail newsletters are delivered

Fastmail newsletters help you get the most out of your email by bringing you the latest new features, productivity tips, company news, and updates on our work in open standards communities.

It’s important for us to connect with you in a way that is respectful of your privacy and your time. This page explains how newsletters reach you without sharing an important email address with email marketers.

Opt-in or opt-out

You can subscribe to Fastmail newsletters by going to Settings → Privacy & Security, scrolling down to the Privacy section, and enabling the button next to Hear about the latest news and features first.

You can unsubscribe from future Fastmail newsletters anytime by disabling that button, or by clicking Unsubscribe from this list or unsubscribe in your Fastmail account at the bottom of any Fastmail newsletter.

Keeping your email private

Each time we send a newsletter, we create new temporary email addresses for every recipient to keep your personal addresses private from our external email marketing tool, Mailchimp.

The temporary address will then expire, meaning you’ll disappear without a trace on Mailchimp and never receive any mail sent to that specific address again.

Mailchimp automatically appends Unsubscribe from this list and Update subscription preferences links to the end of each newsletter we send. As a result of this use of temporary addresses, clicking Update subscription preferences in the newsletter will not have an effect on your newsletter preferences. Clicking Unsubscribe from this list will still allow you to unsubscribe.

At the moment, newsletters are sent 4-6 times per year. Each time a new newsletter is sent, a new list of addresses will be imported, reflecting any new additions or subtractions to users on the list.

Why we use an external service

Fastmail is ad-free and privacy focused. Our company values are focused on improving your online privacy and helping you to connect to others in a meaningful way.

In 2018, we closed Listbox, our email marketing service. It no longer fit into our suite of products focused on human-to-human connection. To send our own newsletter, and to give you the best experience reading newsletters, it made sense to move on to one of the many excellent paid email marketing services, as long as customer privacy could be maintained.

As noted above, we use temporary email addresses to keep your real email address concealed from the makers of external services and to ensure you never receive unwanted email from these platforms.
