Remote file access

As of March 3, 2022, we have ended our support for FTP access. As FTP is an older protocol and we had very few customers using it, continuing to support FTP was no longer sustainable. If you have previously used FTP to access your files, you may be able to continue accessing your files through one of the WebDAV clients listed below.

WebDAV

WebDAV is a protocol for remotely accessing and managing files over the internet.

To access your stored files remotely, you need to use a WebDAV client.

How to set up WebDAV

WebDAV Clients

There are a lot of clients out there to help with WebDAV. Here's a shortlist of some better-made products:

Windows NetDrive
WebDrive
Windows 10 Explorer
Mac Finder (built-in)
Linux Dolphin (KDE) or
Konqueror (KDE)

Log in to your WebDAV client with your full Fastmail username and an app password with WebDAV permissions.

You must use the username you used to sign up for your account. Other email addresses in your account cannot be used.

Some software may have difficulty with the @ symbol. In these cases, you can use other symbols in its place:

  • username@your.domain
  • username#your.domain
  • username/your.domain
  • username=your.domain

Connect to https://webdav.fastmail.com/ using your DAV client. You will see all folders available to you, including shared folders from other users, and also special temporary files/folders. To see your actual files, you have to navigate into the username.domain.tld folder, and then the files folder within that.

To go directly into your own file directory, connect to https://myfiles.fastmail.com instead of https://webdav.fastmail.com.

Windows 10 Explorer

To access your files using Windows 10 Explorer, follow these steps:

  1. Open Windows Explorer (File Manager).
  2. Enter the address https://myfiles.fastmail.com in the address bar section.
  3. You'll be prompted to enter the username and password in a new pop-up window.
  4. Enter your Fastmail username and an app password with Files access. Make sure that you enable the option Remember credentials.

You will now be able to view your files. You can also bookmark the page you're viewing in Windows Explorer by using the Pin to quick action option.

Windows 11 Explorer

To access your files using Windows 11 Explorer, follow these steps:

  1. Open Windows Explorer (File Manager).

  2. Navigate to This PC.

  3. Click on the Menu and Choose Add a network connection.

  4. Enter the address https://myfiles.fastmail.com in the address bar section.

  5. You'll be prompted to enter the username and password in a new pop-up window.

  6. Enter your Fastmail username and an app password with Files access. Make sure that you enable the option Remember credentials.
