Set up eM Client

The instructions and screenshots in this setup guide are for the latest version of eM Client, which you can download for free for Windows.

eM Client needs its own app password to access your information for versions 9 and below. If you use your normal password or your Fastmail two step verification password on an external account, syncing to an external service won't work and you will see a password error.

Set up mail

  1. Open eM Client.
If you have not set up an account in eM client yet, the Welcome to eM Client window should appear. Choose the desired setup options until you reach the Welcome! Set up an account screen.
If you have already set up an account in eM Client, select eM Client from the menu bar and click Add Account.
  2. Enter your Fastmail username and click Start.

  3. In the Account Details screen, enter your name and account name, then click Next.
  4. In the Set up additional encryption screen, select your choice for setting up encryption and follow the onscreen prompts. (If you do not want encryption, select Continue without PGP encryption.) When you are done, click Next.
  5. In the Almost there! screen, you can make any desired changes to your avatar, services, or sync options. (You can change these options later.) When you are done, click Finish.
  6. A new window will appear prompting to enter your Fastmail login credentials. Here, you'll need to enter your Fastmail username and your account's master password (not an app password), then click Log in. If you have two-step verification enabled for your account, you'll also be prompted to authenticate using your 2FA method.
  7. On the following screen, you'll be asked if you want to grant eM Client permission to access your Fastmail account. Click Allow. You'll then be brought back to eM Client with your mail synced!

Set up calendar

  1. Open eM Client. Select eM Client from the menu bar and click Add Account.
  2. Click the Calendar option, then select CalDAV and click Next.
  3. In the Server information screen, enter your account address URL, your Fastmail username, and app password.
    • Account address URL: https://caldav.fastmail.com/dav/calendars/user/<username@domain.tld>/ (replace <username@domain.tld> with your full Fastmail username, including the domain).
      • Example: If your email address is kittens@example.com the account address is https://caldav.fastmail.com/dav/calendars/user/kittens@example.com/
    • User name: Your full Fastmail username, including the domain.
    • Password: Your eM Client app password. (What is an app password?)

Your calendars should now sync with eM Client.

Set up contacts

  1. Open eM Client. If you have already set up an account, select eM Client from the menu bar and click Add Account.
  2. Click the Contacts option, then select CardDAV and click Next.
  3. In the Server information screen, enter your account address URL, your Fastmail username, and app password:
    • Account address URL: https://carddav.fastmail.com/dav/addressbooks/user/<username@domain.tld>/Default (replace <username@domain.tld> with your full Fastmail username, including the domain).

    • User name: Your full Fastmail username, including the domain.
    • Password: Your eM Client app password. (What is an app password?)

    • Click Next.

  4. Give the account a name if you want. This is only used for display purposes within eM Client. Click Next, then click Finish.

To access a business/family account shared contact list, repeat the steps above and enter the following settings:

  • Account Address URL: Enter carddav.fastmail.com/dav/addressbooks/user/<username@domain.tld>/<masteruser@domain.tld>.Shared.
    • While the url references the master user (because that's who the contact list belongs to), still use your email address in the username.
  • User name: <username+shared@domain.tld>.
  • Password: Your eM Client app password. (What is an app password?)
